How to create mods?

Hi,

I was thinking about creating my own mod, but not a simple skin changing. I want to do something a bit more complex. I want to have a simple indicator to show me if my airplane squadron was detected or not.
I do not have any exp in moding. I don't know how WoW API works. Therefore,Where do I strat ? Are there any tutorials available? I would greatly appreciate any help.
